Rushed again

Wednesday, 30. September 2009

OK, it’s been nearly 2 months now since my last post. But hey, I’ve been busy with other stuff. ^^ Anyway, I’ve finally come round to rewriting another song, so here it is. This time it’s by a well-known German band, but the song’s in English (both the original and my version), so it’s OK. 😀

Rushed again

to the tune of Pushed Again by Die Toten Hosen

Whispering voices in my head
sounds like they’re calling my name
the mouse cursor is moving ahead
I start Windows and have to play a game

I feel the rush again…
I feel the rush again…

Why should I play what everyone plays?
Why should I do what everyone does?
I could sit here and play for days
Cause I just think these games are fun

I feel the rush again… (rush again)
I feel the rush again… (rush again)

With Chess Titans I can play on my own
Solitaire is a faithful friend
Playing Hearts when I am at home
Can’t you see
I don’t need your help?

You never understood the rules of Mahjong
And you don’t enjoy finding mines
FreeCell just takes far too long
You get confused
with InkBalls lines

I see you blush again… (blush again)
I see you blush again… (blush again)

Why can’t you just leave me alone?
Your tips are driving me up the wall
You’ve got to go
Cause you drive me nuts
I don’t know,
why you stay at all

And I’m sick (I’m sick)
of this strain (this strain)
in my ears (in my ears, in my ears, in my ears)
and I’m scared (I’m scared)
of being rushed (being rushed)
Again…

I do prefer to play alone
It’s like a drug,
addictive simple games
The rules of spider
solitaire are known
And there’s no blood
involved when I exclaim.

Oh no, that field I clicked was wrong!
Solitaire is a faithful friend
I wouldn’t play Purple
Place for to long
Apart from that I’m quite content

And I play (I play)
all these games (all these games)
all the time (all the time, all the time, all the time)
And I’m scared (I’m scared)
of being rushed (being rushed)
Again…

And I play (I play)
all these games (all these games)
all the time (all the time, all the time, all the time)
And I’m scared (I’m scared)
of being rushed (being rushed)
Again…

My mouse

Wednesday, 5. August 2009

It’s been quite a while since my last post. The reasons are numerous and I won’t bother you with them, but I’ll try to post more frequently from now on. To make up for it, here’s a new song I’ve just finished rewriting. After getting some first hand experience on where the development of computer game control is going, I thought that would make a good theme. So here you are! 🙂

My mouse

To the tune of Funhouse by Pink

I used to play games with my mouse
or keyboard
but that’s out
you can’t get the high-score
today you have to move around much more

Joysticks are part of the past
My gamepad won’t have long to last
They used to cost a lot of cash
Once a tickle
Now just trash

I used to play with my mouse
but nowadays that just earns frowns
I have to jump up and down
I gotta move around, round, round!
I gotta move around!

9, 8, 7, 6 5 4, 3, 2, 1, fun!

I used to have to point and click
and solve riddles bit by bit
But Monkey Island is no more
today they play “Wii Sports Resort”

Computers seeing
what I do
and list’ning to me talking too
When Project Natal comes to be
the characters move just like me

I used to play with my mouse
but nowadays that just earns frowns
I have to jump up and down
I gotta move around, round, round!

I used to play with my mouse
but nowadays that just earns frowns
I have to jump up and down
I gotta move around, round, round!
I gotta move around!

9, 8, 7, 6 5 4, 3, 2, 1, fun!

Oh!
I’m wond’ring how I’m gonna cope
It’s like HAL’s coming, got no hope
I’ll smash the cam
I’ll snap the RAM
I’ll tear the mic, damn
Break this sucker down

do do do do dodo do
do do do do dodo do
do do do do dodo do
do do do do dadadada
do do do do dodo do (9, 8, 7, 6 5 4, 3, 2, 1)
do do do do dodo do
do do do do dodo do
do do do do dodo do

I used to play with my mouse
but nowadays that just earns frowns
I have to jump up and down
I gotta move around, round, round!
I gotta move around!

I should add a few things: I have a few references which not everybody will understand, so here you go.

  • Monkey Island was a series of point-and-click adventures and, at least the first few, are considered by many to be some of the best of the genre. Recently a friend pointed me towards the free point-and-click adventure 5 days a stranger and it’s follow-ups 7 days a sceptic, Trilbys Notes and 6 days a sacrifice, which I find entertaining and they certainly work well on Windows. (For Vista, I had to use compatibility mode, disabling pretty much all of the graphical stuff.) I guess, but haven’t tested, that they will run fine under Linux / Unix with Wine. So, if you want to check out the genre, that’s where you can start.
  • Wii Sports Resort is a game for the Nintendo Wii console, which I haven’t played myself so far but seems to contain a lot of jumping around, swinging your arms and similar things, depending on the sport you’re playing.
  • Project Natal is a truly amazing Project by Microsoft for their console XBOX 360. Just watch this video and you’ll understand.
  • HAL refers to the HAL 9000, a fictional computer in Arthur C. Clarke’s Space Odyssey saga. It’s pretty powerful and intelligent and decides to try to kill the crew of the spaceship it was installed in to help the mission. Hence it has become a warning symbol for computers becoming too intelligent.
  • Well, that’s that. I hope you enjoy it and I’ll soon be back with some more lyrics for you! 🙂

    Memory

    Thursday, 23. April 2009

This song has been on the radio quite a lot around here and when I heard it I knew I just HAD to rewrite it. So here you go:

    (Need more) Memory

To the tune of Memory by Fragma

    That look on my face,
    I’m sweating at night,
    I’m counting the days
and the hours that go by.

You said it would work fine,
    every word was a lie.
    My system is too slow
    and I want to cry.

    I wanted to play
    this great new game.
    Now it doesn’t work
    and you are to blame.

    Now that you deceived me,
    I have to upgrade,
    cause I am afraid
    I need more…

    [CHORUS]
    Memory, memory, memory,
for my programs to work now.
    Memory, memory, memory,
’cause they all just give up now.

    I need more…
    Memory, memory, memory,
for my programs to work now.
    Memory, memory, memory,
’cause they all just give up now.
    [/CHORUS]

    Oh yeah.

    I ordered some online,
    a few gigs of RAM,
    they haven’t arrived yet,
    you don’t give a damn.

I asked for your help but
    you just laughed at me,
    so I keep on waiting
    for delivery.

    Dear postman please come soon,
    I’m begging you, please
I have to play this game
    to meet my buddies.

    They’re already teasing
    the hell out of me
    cause I am still using
    a Pentium III…

    [CHORUS]
    Memory, memory, memory,
for my programs to work now.
    Memory, memory, memory,
’cause they all just give up now.

    I need more…
    Memory, memory, memory,
for my programs to work now.
    Memory, memory, memory,
’cause they all just give up now.
    [/CHORUS]

    Oh year.

    [CHORUS]
    I need more…
    Memory, memory, memory,
for my programs to work now.
    Memory, memory, memory,
’cause they all just give up now.

    I need more…
    Memory, memory, memory,
for my programs to work now.
    Memory, memory, memory,
’cause they all just give up now.
    [/CHORUS]

eBooks take a step – back or forward?

    Sunday, 28. December 2008

I just saw an ad, which surprised me: An ad for the “100 Classic Book Collection” for the Nintendo DS. I’ve known of some efforts to make the NDS more than a gaming console (e.g. the Personal Trainer: Cooking), but eBooks is something I wasn’t expecting.

Why not? Well for one thing, the screen is pretty small. Reading a classic book by William Shakespeare, Thomas Hardy, Jules Verne or Jane Austen (which are advertised on its website) could be quite a drag – as the screen is tiny, you either have to choose a very small font size or accept that there will be quite a few sentences that are simply to long to display on one page. And especially with some of the more difficult classical books (there’s some Oscar Wilde on that little cartridge), that can be a nuisance. The other big reason is of course their image – cooking is one thing, it contains movement and not staring at the screen all the time. Books are something quite different.

On the pro side, if they ARE readable, this could help educating the world – it’s cheaper than buying all of those books, you’ll have some you’d never thought of buying otherwise etc. I haven’t seen this in action so far, so I’ll try not to judge it right now.

Anyway, if this continues, Nintendo might actually succeed in changing their image. And maybe, that could change the image of all of the gaming industry. Just maybe.

    Greetings,
    Nepomuk

    Fröhliche Weihnacht

    Tuesday, 23. December 2008

OK, up till now all posts here have been in English and in general I would like to keep it that way. Also, normally the lyrics I post here should be about Subjects that are known to a wide range of people. But today, I’m ignoring both of these rules for a special occasion.

As you will be aware of no doubt if you live in a country where Christianity has any effect on society, it is christmas eve tomorrow. As most of you won’t be aware of, I started playing a browser game called Xhodon recently. Combining both, I rewrote the lyrics to the traditional Christmas song “Fröhliche Weihnacht” – and here is the result:

    Fröhliche Weihnacht, Xhodon

to the tune of “Fröhliche Weihnacht”, a traditional German Christmas song

    “Fröhliche Weihnacht überall!”
tönet hier durch Xhodon, froher Schall.
    Rentiere und Lebensbaum,
    Weihnachtswichtel glücklich schau’n!

    “Fröhliche Weihnacht überall!”
tönet hier durch Xhodon, froher Schall.
    Darum stimmet alle ein
    in den Jubelton,
    denn es kommt ein Drachenei
    aus der Zuchtstation.

    “Fröhliche Weihnacht überall!”
tönet hier durch Xhodon, froher Schall.
    Kampf gegen die Wächter,
    unser Kampf bist du;
du führst denen, die drauf bau’n,
    Rohstoffe gern zu.

    “Fröhliche Weihnacht überall!”
tönet hier durch Xhodon, froher Schall.
    Was wir ander’n taten,
    sei getan mit List,
    dass bekennen jeder muß,
    Xhodon ist für mich.

Greetings and merry Christmas to all of you, 🙂

    A gamers life

    Tuesday, 16. December 2008

OK, here are my newest Lyrics. Enjoy! ^^

    A gamers life

To the tune of This is the life by Amy MacDonald

Oh the guild runs them down
    A cold dark fight tonight
And the heroes they were fighting to the vicious vibe
And the elves chase the gnomes with the bows in their hands
While the weak kobold fighters sit way over there
And the battle it gets louder
    Each one louder than before

    And you’re fighting the fights
    Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
    Where you gonna raid tonight?

    And you’re fighting the fights
    Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
    Where you gonna raid tonight?
    Where you gonna raid tonight?

So you’re heading down the map with your heroes all four
And you’re waiting for the others cause you have to be more
But nobody’s there and nobody’s there ’til four
So you’re sitting there with nothing to do
Talking about dragon eggs, how to get just a few
And where you’re gonna go and where you’re gonna raid tonight

    And you’re fighting the fights
    Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
    Where you gonna raid tonight?

    And you’re fighting the fights
    Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
    Where you gonna raid tonight?
    Where you gonna raid tonight?

    And you’re fighting the fights
    Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
    Where you gonna raid tonight?

    And you’re fighting the fights
    Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
    Where you gonna raid tonight?

    And you’re fighting the fights
    Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
    Where you gonna raid tonight?

    And you’re fighting the fights
    Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
    Where you gonna raid tonight?

    Where you gonna raid tonight?
